Mac OS 10 Mail Configuration (Later Versions)

  • Setting up Mac OS 10 Mail for the first time
  • Modifying existing mail settings in Mac OS 10 Mail

    Important Notes:

  • Where 'username' and 'username@svn.net' appear in this document, use your username and not the word 'username'.
  • Information should be entered to match that shown in the images below.


    1. When you start Mail for the first time, you will be prompted for basic setup information by a window like the one below.

    2. Enter your full name in the Full Name: box.

    3. Enter your e-mail address in the E-mail Address: box.

    4. Enter mail.svn.net in the Incoming Mail Server box.

    5. Select POP for Account Type:.

    6. Enter your username in the User Name: box. (This is the first part of your e-mail address, before the @ sign.)

    7. Enter your password in the Password: box.

    8. Enter mail.svn.net in the Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP): box.

    9. Click OK.

    10. The software will now attempt to test your mail settings. If you're not connected to the Internet, this test may fail. Click Continue.

    11. When prompted to import your mailboxes, select No, unless you have e-mail to import from another e-mail program on your computer.

    12. Your account is now properly configured.


    1. To make changes to an existing account, start the Mail program and then select Preferences from the Mail menu at the top of your screen.

    2. Click on Accounts at the top of the window that opens.

    3. Click on Account Information.

    4. The Description: should contain a descriptive title of your mail account. This can be anything you like.

    5. The Email Address: box should contain your e-mail address, such as username@svn.net

    6. The Full Name: box should contain your full name, as you would like it to appear on e-mail that you send.

    7. The Incoming Mail Server: should be set to mail.svn.net

    8. The User Name: box should contain your SVN username. This is the first part of your e-mail address, before the @ sign.

    9. The Password: box should contain your SVN password. For security reasons, your password will not be displayed on the screen.

    10. Click on the Server Settings button.

    11. Outgoing Mail Server: should be mail.svn.net.

    12. The remaining fields should be left at their default settings.

    13. Click OK.

    14. Click on Advanced.

    15. Enable this account, Include when automatically checking for new mail, and Remove copy from server after retrieving a message should all be checked.

    16. Be sure that Right away is selected.

    17. Authentication: should be set to Password.

    18. Close the Accounts window, being sure to save any changes if prompted.
