What does the Mail Manager Tool do?
What should I know before I use the Mail Manager Tool?
How do I use it?
Enter your current Password on the Password: line.
Click on View/Modify Settings. You will be taken to the main screen of the tool. While it may look complicated at first, it is actually very simple. The tool consists of several options that can be turned on or off, as well as a few things that you must fill in yourself. The first thing you need to do is re-enter your password in the Password: box for confirmation purposes. The remainder of the options are explained below.
What do all of the different options mean?
Username
Password
Whitelist Addresses:
Blacklist Addresses:
Discard mail not addressed directly to me
I also receive mail at the following addresses:
Discard mail that appears to be spam:
Enable vacation auto-reply:
The Username field must contain your SVN username. This is the first part of your e-mail address, before the @svn.net. If you have your own domain name, be sure that you enter your SVN username, which is the same one you use to upload your web pages.
This field must contain your current SVN password. If you have forgotten your password, please call our office at (707) 781-9999.
This box should contain a list of addresses that you always want to be able to receive e-mail from. Multiple addresses should be separated with a single space or a single comma. If you are on any mailing lists, be sure to include their address(es) here. The whitelist has precedence over all of the other options.
The blacklist is the opposite of the whitelist. It should contain addresses that you never want to receive e-mail from. As with the whitelist, multiple addresses should be separated by a single space or a single comma. It is only worthwhile to add repeat offenders on your blacklist. Most spam comes from invalid addresses that is changed frequently. If you add non-repeat offenders to your blacklist, you will only be delaying your incoming e-mail because of the additional time required to check it against your blacklist.
Many spam messages don't contain your e-mail address in the visible To: or Cc: headers. Your address is actually hidden in the Bcc: (Blind Carbon Copy) field. By turning on this option, you can block all mail that doesn't contain your address in the To: or Cc: fields. (Please note, if you have multiple e-mail addresses, aliases, or your own domain name, be sure you read about the option below.) If you are on any mailing lists ("list servs"), be sure to add their addresses to the field described below ("I also receive mail at the following addresses:." To turn this option on, click in the box to check it. (The mail that is discarded with this option can be viewed in a separate mail folder. Click here for details.)
If you enable the Discard mail not addressed directly to me option and you receive e-mail at any address other than your username @svn.net, list your other alias(es) here. Multiple entries should be separated by a single comma or a single space. For example, if your SVN username is somebody and you also have the domain name somewhere.com, you would fill in somewhere.com in this field.
This option utilizes the SpamAssassin software and is, by far, the most powerful option. SpamAssassin is a sophisticated spam filtering system that uses a variety of tests to determine if a message is spam. It is very accurate and has a very low rate of false positives. However, as with all spam filtering methods, there is always the possiblity that legitimate e-mail will be identified as spam and discarded. To turn this option on, click in the box to check it. (The mail that is discarded with this option can be viewed in a separate mail folder. Click here for details.)
This option allows you to configure a message that will automatically be sent in reply to all of your incoming e-mail. This is particularly useful if you are going to be away from your e-mail for several days and you want to notify people of that. To use it, check the Enable vacation auto-reply box and type your automatic response message into the box below it.
